Ministers asked to fast-track appeals process

Council warns against court delays for environmentalists' appeal against M74 extension

Council leaders have asked Scottish Ministers to fast-track the judicial process so that environmental appeals against the proposed M74 extension do not mean long delays in court.

Glasgow City Council's leader Steven Purcel wants the appeal hearing to start within three months, rather than next summer, and is asking ministers to put pressure on the Scottish Courts Administration. He said that ministers needed to consider the implications a delay would have on such a major economic development.

He said: "We could end up with a situation where this project is delayed for several years and the buoyancy of the economy that is around now is lost."

The Scottish Executive had overruled the findings of a public inquiry and approved the road. Friends of the Earth has appealed against this decision.
