Volunteers for children's panels sought

The Scottish Executive is looking for around 600 people to take part in the children's hearing system

The Scottish Executive has launched a recruitment drive to get volunteers for children's panels.

Volunteers do not need any special qualifications. Current panel members range in age from 20 to 71 and come from all walks of life. Children's panels help address the needs of vulnerable children, such as those who may have been abused or assaulted, or who are in trouble at schoool or with the law.

The children's hearing system, unique to Scotland, consists of lay tribunals of three panel members. The children, parents/carers and relevant professionals all normally attend the hearing and take part in the discussion.

Deputy Education Minister Robert Brown said: "We need around 600 people to join the thousands of willing volunteers who already make a real difference to the lives of children in Scotland by serving on their local children's panel."

During 2003-2004, more than 45,000 children were referred to the Children's Reporter. Around two-thirds of the cases are on care and protection grounds.
