Glasgow takes tough line on injury claims
City Council rejecting 80 per cent of compensation claims in drive to uncover cheats
A specially trained claims handling team put in place to assess compensation claims against Glasgow City Council has saved the taxpayer millions of pounds.
The council received around 1,000 injury claims directed against its land services department from April 2003 until March 2005, which deals with the state of the city's roads. The new system for inspection and investigation of claims has led to the rejection of about 80 per cent of them.
Council leader Steven Purcell said it was only right that the council defended itself against incorrect claims. The council had launched a "firmer but fair" approach to all liability claims, joining Manchester City Council as among the leading councils in challenging vexatious compensation claims.
The team's remit extends to inspection and risk management systems as well as claims handling.
