Bailed rape suspects figure doubles

272 bailed rape suspects in 2004 compared to 134 in 1999

The number of rape suspects granted bail has more than doubled in five years.

In 1999, 134 people accused of rape were granted bail, while in 2004 this figure had risen to 272. The number of people released on bail who were facing attempted rape charges has also increased, from 47 in 1999 to 67 in 2004.

The figures were revealed in a written parliamentary answer by Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson yesterday.

Kenny McAskill, the SNP's justice spokesman, said the figures showed that the Executive's package of bail reforms announced this week do not got far enough.

An Executive spokesperson said the final decision on bail still rested with the judge and under the new regime, judges granting bail would have to state their reasons for doing so in court.
