Ten sign up for quit smoking course as Law Society of Scotland prepares for ban

The Law Society of Scotland is encouraging its staff to stop smoking ahead of the March 2006 ban on smoking in public place.

Human Resources manager Ken Cunningham, himself a smoker for over 30 years, came up with the idea of encouraging the Law Society's remaining smokers to take up the Allen Carr "Easyway" course, which claims up to a 90% success rate. Ten members of staff - more than half of the organisation's remaining smokers - have agreed to take part.

He said: "While only a small percentage of our staff smoke, we wanted to encourage those who want or have tried to stop in the past to finally kick the habit.

"The benefits of stopping smoking are well documented and providing this opportunity should contribute to the long-term health and well-being of our staff."
