Olivia Giles shortlisted for "Outstanding Young Person of the World" award

A Scots lawyer is one of 10 finalists shortlisted for a competition to find the most inspirational young person in the world.

Olivia Giles, a partner with Maclay, Murray and Spens at the time, was struck down by meningitis in February 2002. This led to the amputation of her hands and feet. She now campaigns with the Meningitis Trust and Meningitis Research Foundation to raise awareness of the disease and its symptoms, and has raised £480,000 for research into meningitis.

Ms Giles, 40, from Edinburgh, will travel to Vienna next month for the award ceremony, as will fellow Scot Magnus Macfarlane-Barrow, from Dalmally, founder of Scottish International Relief, who is also shortlisted.
