Leading Aberdeen City Council solicitors defending complaints to Law Society of Scotland

[Updated: see foot]

The Law Society of Scotland is investigating Aberdeen City Council's top two lawyers for alleged professional misconduct.

However the solicitors, who remain at work as normal, are defending themselves against the allegations.

The complaints were lodged by former council employees Philip Cooper and Kenny Mackie against the head of legal services Crawford Langley and his deputy solicitor Fiona Selbie.

The complaint against Mr Langley relates to his evidence during the trial of Mr Mackie, accused of breaching the Data Protection Act while manager of the council's antisocial behaviour unit. The complaint against Ms Selbie relates to her representing the council at Mr Mackie's employment tribunal hearing.

The Law Society of Scotland said that the complaints were now going through the investigation process.

[Update to this item: In January 2007, after further investigation, the Society decided not to proceed with this case.]
