Successful lawyers are not just billing machines, survey reports
Leading lawyers in the UK are not the stereotypical "billing machines", the cold, hard professionals who go to any lengths to win a case, according to a new study.
"Legal Eagles? Leadership Secrets of Senior Lawyers", a report from recruitment consultants Hay Group, claims that "star" performers in a top firm are twice as likely as "average" performers to be "affiliative" - that is, expressing genuine concern for others.
They are also less likely to be perfectionists setting unrealistic goals, the study continues, describing them as "collaborative and personable visionaries".
