A Labour MSP has lodged an amendment to the Family Law Bill now before the Scottish Parliament to ban the physical punishment of children.
Marilyn Glen, the MSP for North East Scotland, has the backing of several children's charities. The bill is due to be debated before the Justice 1 Committee next week.
A similiar attempt to ban the smacking of children under three years old was defeated in 2002. Jim Wallace, the Justice Minister at the time, dropped the plan after a parliamentary committee considered it would be unworkable.
Deputy Justice Minister Hugh Henry said yesterday that Parliament had expressed its will very clearly and that this should be given time to bed in.
