Party explores action to force Glasgow City Council to cut pollution

Scotland's Green Party is exploring legal avenues to cut pollution in Glasgow.

The party will launch a campaign today near the city's Hope Street - one of the most polluted streets in Scotland - following reports that Glasgow has breached the air quality objective for this year.

The Greens claim that the main causes for the pollution are rising traffic levels and congestion and that no effective action is being taken by local or central government.

Legal action has been brought in Germany against pollution in Berlin and other cities, in an effort to hold the authorities responsible for their failure to ensure that the air meets safety standards set by an EU directive in force since the beginning of the year. The Greens hope that if these cases are successful, they could set a precedent for similar cases in Scotland.
