Father calls for Lord Advocate to take action

Iain McKie says those who put his daughter through perjury trial should face prosecution

The father of Shirley McKie has called for Lord Advocate Colin Boyd to take action against the fingerprint experts whose evidence led to his daughter's perjury trial.

Iain McKie said that if the Lord Advocate does not take action, he will seek a private prosecution.

As reported on The Journal Online yesterday, Ms McKie was awarded £750,000 in damages in an out-of-court settlement against the Scottish Executive on behalf of the Scottish Criminal Records Office earlier this week.

Fingerprint experts from the SCRO had wrongly said prints found at the home of murder victim matched those of Ms McKie. She was later found not guilty when tried for perjury. After a nine-year fight to clear her name the case settled as evidence was about to be heard in the Court of Session.

In settling the case, the Executive said an "unfortunate but honest mistake" had been. However, it did not admit liability.
