MSPs not in favour of human rights tsar

Justice 1 Committee fails to see value of proposed Commissioner

Proposals to establish a Scottish Commissioner for Human Rights have failed to gain the endorsement of MSPs.

In a parliamentary report published today, the Justice 1 Committee has questioned what added benefits a Commissioner could bring.

Labour MSP Pauline McNeill, the committee convener, asked whether such an office was necessary in a country where breaches of human rights are very rare. She said the majority of the committee were not convinced and therefore could make no recommendations to the parliament on the general principles of the bill.

The parliamentary debate on the general principles of the Scottish Commissioner for Human Rights Bill is due to take place on 16 March.
