Depute caught with prostitute escapes court case but resigns
The case against a Glasgow principal procurator fiscal depute caught with a prostitute has been dropped.
Stuart MacFarlane was arrested with 27-year-old Joanne Crane after he had attended a function at Strathclyde Police headquarters in Glasgow. It is alleged she was performing a sex act on him in the street.
MacFarlane was also charged with resisting two police officers - Sergeant William Stewart and Constable Grant McCormack by struggling with the two officers, causing one to fall to the ground and injuring both.
The incident took place in Glasgow city centre in the early hours of Saturday 29 October 2005.
At Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday, a fiscal from a different office brought in to deal with the case told Sheriff Craig Henry that it would not be in the public interest to proceed. MacFarlane and Crane were not in court to hear the charges against them dropped.
Papers have been produced to the Crown showing that MacFarlane has been receiving psychiatric treatment following service as a reservist in Iraq.
It is understood that MacFarlane has resigned from his £43,000 post.
