Lack of family lawyers sparks recruitment drive

Family Law Association concerned that graduates not opting for family law

A recruitment drive has been launched to try to attract more students to family law.

The initiative comes from the Family Law Association, which claims that solicitors' firms have been inundated with inquiries about the new Family Law (Scotland) Act - which came into force in May - and this has highlighted the shortage of family lawyers, particularly in rural areas.

The association is currently in talks with law departments at Scottish universities to see what can be done to rectify the situation. It will be visiting universities to speak to students in a bid to encourage them to consider family law in the same way that corporate and commercial law firms do.

Rachael Kelsey, chair of the Family Law Assocation, said the low number of graudates opting for family law was a serious problem. It was essential that more of them opted to take it up so that people were able to get quality advice when it mattered most.
