Scots banker and colleagues lose fight to stay in the UK

Scots banker, Gary Mulgrew, and two accused colleagues from NatWest bank, David Bermingham and Giles Darby, are to face trial in the US over an alleged £11 million fraud.

Mr Mulgrew, son of Labour MSP Trish Godman, have been extradited under the Extradition Act of 2003.

This has led to criticism from opposition parties and business leaders who argue it is unfair that Britons can be extradited to the US without evidence first being produced that they have a case to answer, according to a report in today's Herald.

A separate 2003 treaty, designed to ensure reciprocal arrangements for the extradition of US nationals to the UK, has yet to be ratified in the UK and US.

The three men deny the fraud in which their former employer, NatWest, was allegedly advised to sell part of an Enron company for less than it was worth.
