Renfrewshire cracks down on smoking in public vehicles

Almost 50 bus, taxi and delivery drivers have been fined for ignoring the smoking ban in public enclosed places in one local authority area.

The offenders were caught smoking in vehicles in the Renfrewshire area and were issued with a £50 fixed penalty.

Renfrewshire Council has caught 47 offenders since the ban came into effect in March, while Glasgow City Council has only issued four such notices over the same period, East Renfrewshire has given out one fine and none have been issued in North or South Lanarkshire.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Executive said the vast majority of people were complying with the law and that the people in more than 98% of places surveyed, including restaurants, hotels, licensed premises and taxis, were not smoking in these premises.
