Advisory group wants drink-drive limit cut

But criticised for applying this only to young drivers

An advisory group is recommending that the government lower the drink-drive limit for under 25s in a bid to save lives.

A report from the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD) wants the drink-drive limit reduced to 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood for drivers aged 17 to 25. The limit is currently 80 milligrams.

The report says that drivers under the age of 25 are more likely to have accidents and fail breath tests when involved in accidents.

However, various transport and accident experts have disagreed with this advice.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said it would welcome a reduction in the drink-drive limit but that it should apply to all age groups, and the Association of Chief Police Officers in Scotland (ACPOS) said its message was that people should not drink and drive at all.

The UK Transport Minister Stephen Ladyman said there were no plans to reduce the drink-driving limit for anyone.
