First podcast for Law Society of Scotland

2 Oct 06

Panel session from IT conference will be viewable online

The Law Society of Scotland will broadcast its first podcast from its annual nothing.but.the.net (NBTN) conference on Tuesday 3 October in Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall.

Now in its seventh year, the legal IT conference is one of the Society’s best-attended events and intends to reach an even wider audience via an online broadcast, which listeners will be able to click onto from the Society’s website.

The podcast will take the form of a round table discussion during the event and will be chaired by the Society’s IT director Gordon Brewster. Panel guests include the Society’s chief executive Douglas Mill, NBTN convener and solicitor advocate Paul Motion from Brechin Tindal Oatts, and Charles Christian, editor of Legal Technology Insider.

Gordon Brewster said: “Podcasting may seem pretty alien to some solicitors, but it’s becoming more widely used by companies, including some legal firms, as a serious business and marketing tool and is not simply for teenagers who want to download from the internet on to their MP3 players or iPods.

He added: "Unlike some podcasts, this will not be a lecture, but more like a radio show with a panel of experts who will explore some of the highlights of the conference and discuss issues which directly affect solicitors."

Mr Brewster said the Society was thinking creatively to use technology to its full potential so that aolicitors could fulfil their annual requirement of 20 hours' CPD in ways that suited them individually. It has also produced a series of CPD DVDs and in June it launched a new CPD online service.

This year’s nothing.but.the.net keynote speaker is Charles Christian who will make his predictions for the ever-increasing use of technology in the legal profession. Sessions include legal aid online, IT in civil courts and the electronic presentation of evidence in court.
