Privatisation of prisoner escorts has freed up officers for frontline duties

A report has found that the private sector takeover of prisoner escort duties has freed up hundreds of police officers for frontline work.

The report shows that since Reliance took over in February 2005, more than 300 police officers and 200 prison officers have been moved to other duties.

Reliance's Scottish operations director Jim Greenoak said he hoped that those who had criticised the company would now be as quick to praise them.

The report on Reliance's first 18 months of carrying out prisoner escorts showed that the costs of maintaining vehicles had also been reduced.
