Urquhart in line to head CBI Scotland

Morton Fraser chief executive breaks male line with vice chair appointment

Linda Urquhart, chief executive of Edinburgh and Glasgow solicitors Morton Fraser, is to be the next vice chairman of CBI Scotland.

Her two year term, which runs from September this year, will be followed by a similar period as chairman of the employers' organisation, which has never previously appointed a woman leader at either Scotland or UK level. Seven of the 47 current Scottish council members are women.

Ms Urquhart has held her chief executive position since 1999 but still keeps the role a part time one. Morton Fraser has seen rapid expansion during that period and this month opened a London office.

Married with two daughters, Ms Urquhart described it as "a great honour" to be the first woman to hold the CBI post.

Iain McMillan, director of CBI Scotland, insisted that she had been appointed purely on merit, with no positive discrimination.
