Courts orders £1 confiscation for drug dealer

Proceeds assessed at £300,000 but no assets found

A man jailed for five years in December for supplying cocaine had a nominal confiscation order of £1 made against him yesterday after a court heard that an investigation had failed to trace any assets.

Craig McAteer, 37 yesterday, claimed his drug dealing activities had earned him very little. However, prosecutors warned that the Crown would revive the case if further assets came to light.

McAteer was part of a gang who ran a supply operation in the west of Scotland. He was arrested following a three-year undercover operation and pled guilty to being concerned in supplying of cocaine with a street value of £237,000 between March 2003 and May 2004.

The Crown had valued the proceeds of his offending at £305,386.97, but in the event the court made the nominal £1 order and gave McAteer 28 days to pay.
