Child witness measures reach summary court

28 Mar 07

Screens, live TV links, and supporters to be available in non-jury trials

New measures to help child witnesses will be introduced in sheriff non-jury courts next week.

From 1 April special measures such as screens, CCTV links and allowing child witnesses a "supporter" to sit beside them while giving evidence will be available in sheriff court summary cases.

Further special measures can be applied for, including remote TV links, use of prior statements, and taking evidence by a commissioner outwith the trial in certain non-sexual offence cases.

The arrangements will also be rolled out to adults in sheriff court summary cases, and all vulnerable witnesses in civil proceedings, during the next 12 months.

Deputy Justice Minister Johann Lamont said: "The use of a supporter, TV link or screen will help reduce the stress associated with attending court. Along with measures such as the use of prior statements and the taking of evidence by a commissioner, we will support child witnesses in playing their full part in ensuring justice is done."
