Shahid Pervez to be sentenced next month

A Glasgow lawyer who admitted attempting to pervert the course of justice was decribed yesterday in court as "naive"and "stupid".

Shahid Pervez, 39, gave a man (who can't be named for legal reasons) a false alibi for his trial on abduction and attempted extortion. Pervez was working in his office on Victoria Road when he was approached by one of his clients who was indicted for a High Court trial.

The man asked Pervez to provide him with an alibi and he agreed. A special defence of alibi was then lodged for the trial and the Crown Office instructed police officers to take a statement from Pervez, who told them that the man was in his office discussing an insurance claim at the time the alleged offences where supposed to have taken place.

Paul McBride QC, defending Pervez, described him as a "naive" and "stupid young man", who had been threatened by people involved in serious crime.

The judge Lord Hardie was told that Pervez is no longer working as a solicitor and will eventually be struck off. Lord Hardie told him that he faced prison for the offence, but he continued his bail.

Pervez will be sentenced next month.
