Employers' guidelines to help with dyslexia

Practical policies available for employers on dealing with recognised disability
The British Dyslexia Association has published a code of practice for employers, offering guidelines for supporting dyslexic employees in the workplace.
The BDA's code offers employers accessible, actionable advice to achieve a dyslexia friendly workplace in which difficulties can be supported and talents fully developed. Without setting out to discuss in detail the nature of dyslexia in adults, it is essentially a concise and practical guide bringing together relevant information from a variety of sources.
Dyslexia, which affects around 10% of the population, 4% severely, is a recognised difficulty under the Disability Discrimination Acts. The guidelines will assist an employer to adopt policies and procedures in compliance with the legislation.
The BDA says that many dyslexic people have above average gifts in the areas of creativity, lateral thinking and problem solving, talents of particular value in the workplace.
The code of practice will be available from 17 September from the British Dyslexia Association. See www.bdadyslexia.org.uk for purchasing details or phone 0118 966 2677.
