Scots lawyers triumph in world rugby

Inaugural Lawyers' Rugby World Cup won by Scottish team

Will it prove a good omen? The Law Society of Scotland’s rugby team won the inaugural Lawyers’ Rugby World Cup after triumphing in all four of their matches last week.

The team beat Wales 12-7, Italy 33-12, England 12-5, and Italy again – the second time by 10-7.

The tournament, organised by Rugby Club du Palais, took place between 11 and 13 September at the Charlety Stadium in the south of Paris, just as the other Rugby World Cup was getting underway across the city.

The Society’s squad included Scots lawyers from Orkney to London: David Fairnie of Lows, Orkney; Tom Stocker and Mark Quinn of Pinsent Masons; Douglas Williamson of Warners; Andrew Yule of Burness; Chris Sheldon of Turcan Connell; Ian Dunckley of Ashtenne; Stephen Goldie, Christopher Stephen and David Lightbody of Brodies; Andrew Stott and Douglas Roberts of Semple Fraser; Murray Soutar of Wright Johnston & Mackenzie; Andrew Fox of Weil Gotshal; Nigel Scullion of Nicholas J Scullion & Co; Mark Gibson of Digby Brown; Euan Bremner of Burges Salmon; and Christopher Friel of Dundas & Wilson.

The Society hopes the win will provide the impetus to increase the profession's participation in the game. Any lawyer who would like to become involved should contact Jody Fitchet at the Society (JodyFitchet@lawscot.org.uk) or Douglas Roberts (douglas.roberts@semplefraser.co.uk).
