Typo almost results in bottled water ban

7 Nov 07

Legislation mistake not spotted by two committees

A typing error almost resulted in a bottled mineral water ban in Scotland.

MSPs agreed to correct the error yesterday after a law drawn up by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) tightening up water quality standards missed out the word "not". The sentence read that no-one could sell water in a bottle marked or labelled with the description spring water, which had been marked or labelled in accordance with regulation 11.

The provision, which had not been noticed by either the Subordinate Legislation Committee or the Health Committee at Holyrood who approved the rules, should have read "which is not marked or labelled".

The Subordinate Legislation Committee agreed to the corrected version.
