National social care charity showcases rehabilitation work

Turning Point Scotland is showcasing its work at the Glasgow Science Centre today to publicise the work the national social care charity provides throughout Scotland.

The theme of the day is “A Just Scotland”. Treating people justly underpins the charity’s approach of providing services that suit people, especially those who may not always be viewed sympathetically by society.

Turning Point Scotland’s services include the 218 centre in Glasgow for women offenders, and Northern Horizons, based in Peterhead, which provides services to adults in the criminal justice system.

In addition, last year the charity supported more than 14,500 adults with complex needs, including learning disabilities, mental health problems, autism, acquired brain injuries, Huntington's disease and early onset dementia. The charity also supports people with drink and drugs problems.

Netta Maciver, chief executive of Turning Point Scotland, said: “Justice does not apply only to those who break the law, but to those who need support from society for a range of issues."

Minister for Community Safety Fergus Ewing is to deliver the keynote speech to delegates, and will present the Turning Point Scotland Criminal Justice Award 2008, for charities targeting professionals with the dual intention of informing them of Turning Point's work and also encouraging them to access services in the future for their clients.

Student essay prize

Turning Point Scotland has also invited undergraduate law students from the University of Strathclyde to submit a 2,000 word assignment entitled, “What are the main causes of offending behaviour and how might this behaviour be reduced in Scotland in the 21st century?”

Sponsored by Messrs J C Hughes, the award will be judged by Sheriff Robert Anthony QC, Doctor Robertson and Dr Piacentini from the Law School University of Strathclyde and Netta Maciver.
