Govan Law Centre has launched a new "mini-site" on the new right to apply for time to pay for council tax debt.
The idea behind the site is to encourage those who need this facility to do so. Solicitors can refer clients with such arrears to the free site so they can work out and broker a reasonable repayment plan, using the new time to pay rights if necessary.
Provisions of the Bankruptcy and Diligence etc (Scotland) Act 2007 were brought into force on 1 April extending the "time to pay order" legislation to debts enforceable by summary warrant, such as council tax debts.
Govan Law Centre's principal solicitor Mike Dailly said: "We know half a million households in Scotland have council tax arrears and often different firms of sheriff officers pursue different years of arrears against the same household.
"That can make it difficult to broker reasonable repayment plans, and often people stop paying other priority debts in order to prevent diligence. We believe these new rights will be good news for debtors and other creditors."
