Capital's ethnic law centre shows demand
Edinburgh centre helps over 1,000 people in first 18 months
Edinburgh's Ethnic Minorities Law Centre has helped over 1,000 people in its first 18 months of operation, according to figures just released by the centre.
The Edinburgh EMLC, modelled on a similar venture begun in Glasgow 15 years earlier, has pilot funding for an initial two years from the Scottish Government. After 18 months it has taken up the cases of 300 individuals and dealt with a further 700 telephone enquiries.
While most of its calls dealt with immigration issues, employment and discrimination matters also arose. Those assisted were of many nationalities, including Indians, Turks and Chinese.
EMLC said that its main challenge at present was to consolidate funding to maintain and develop its service after its pilot grant runs out.
