Two branches also close as firm consolidates to combat property market troubles
The Dundee-based law firm Blackadders is to close two offices and make 44 members of staff redundant, following a review of its operations in the wake of the property market slump.
Following its warning in July that between 40 and 60 jobs would have to go, the firm appointed a staff liaison committee to look at ways of avoiding compulsory redundancies. In the outcome, 32 members of staff have lost their jobs through a points scoring system, while 12 have elected for voluntary redundancy.
The offices in Kirriemuir and Carnoustie will close, while those in Dundee, Forfar and Arbroath remain open.
Johnston Clark, Blackadders' managing partner, said the moves were necessary to secure the firm's long term future. He added that it had been an extremely difficult time for the company, but the redundancies had been lower than expected and 165 jobs had been secured.
He added: "We are confident that following this review we can take our business forward successfully."
