In-house team shortlisted for award

An in-house legal team from a Scottish council has been shortlisted for an award in the Local Government Chronicle (LGC) awards 2007.

The Scottish Borders Council Legal Services section is one of six finalists in the legal team category. These UK awards for local authorities look at the principal achievements between October 2005 and September 2006.

The legal team’s application contained an innovative summary of how the team had played a central role in many areas of council service delivery during the year.

Their application outlined 20 major projects, including the Waverley Railway (Scotland) Act 2006, schools PPP, broadband, mock court trials for school students, assistance for disability initiatives, the redevelopment of Galashiels town centre and a sponsored customer survey.

Ian Wilkie, head of Legal Services, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the SBC legal team has been chosen as one of the six finalists and that we are the only Scottish council shortlisted for the legal category.

"It was quite an eye opener to summarise our many achievements throughout the year and to recognise the dedication and hard work of the whole team. The winner will be announced on 12 March 2007 and we look forward to hearing the results."
