DLA Piper lawyers to join law clinic
Legal firm DLA Piper is to lend its support to the University of Strathclyde’s Law Clinic.
The student-run clinic, unique in Scotland, offers help to those who cannot afford a solicitor but who do not qualify for legal aid. Students provide legal advice under the supervision of university staff. DLA Piper solicitors will be dedicating time on a pro bono basis, working alongside the students as they advise the clinic’s clients.
Since its launch in October 2003, the law clinic has proved tremendously successful and has handled more than 400 cases, gaining over £25,000 for its clients in successful claims or defences of claims. It does not act in areas such as debt or immigration advice where there are already adequate services provided.
Joan Devine, corporate social responsibility partner at DLA Piper Scotland, said: “This is an excellent initiative to become involved with as part of our growing corporate social reponsibility and pro bono work in Scotland.
“As well as supporting our local community, our trainees and solicitors have the opportunity to gain experience in developing client management skills, conducting meetings and expanding their knowledge on a wide range of legal issues.”
Donald Nicolson, a law professor at the university and the director of the law clinic, said: “The involvement of DLA Piper solicitors is an important new development for the law clinic. It enables it to increase the number of clients assisted and provides the students with access to expert advice from practising professionals. As a result the clinic is now much better placed to expand the level of legal services it provides to those in need.”
