Smart and Millar are 2009-10 office bearers

Ian Smart, the current Vice President, will become President of the Law Society of Scotland from May 2009.

It was also revealed at today's meeting of the Society's Council that Jamie Millar, the current treasurer, has been elected Vice President from that date.

After the meeting, Ian Smart, who runs his own practice in Cumbernauld, said: “It is exciting to be able to carry on the valuable work started by Richard Henderson, particularly during the Society’s 60th anniversary year.

“I hope to take forward liberalisation of legal services, to ensure the Society has a governance structure fit for the 21st century and to promote an outward looking profession that is fully engaged with Scottish civic society.”

Jamie Millar, a partner in the Glasgow office of Brodies LLP, said: “I am honoured to be elected Vice President, particularly from such a strong field of candidates.

“The Society has already approved the introduction of alternative business structures, while also committing itself to put in place an appropriate regulatory regime.

“I look forward to playing a part in overseeing that process while maintaining the integrity of the legal profession in Scotland.”
