MSP seeks support for bill on wrongful death payouts
Two months after MSPs rejected a move to accelerate the process, Labour MSP Bill Butler has called on cross-party unity to support his proposed shake-up of compensation laws for wrongful deaths.
The aim of Butler's bill is to speed up the process of paying compensation to victims of disease and accidents, including those in the workplace.
The bill is based on Scottish Law Commission recommendations, published in September last year. If passed, the changes will remove the need to go to court in some cases where liability has been admitted, allowing victims' relatives to be compensated quicker.
The bill will also take away the need for courtroom debate on living expenses.
The Glasgow Anniesland MSP said: "I appeal to all parties to support this bill. We should all be able to agree about making the law fairer."
