Ash hangs cloud for funeral directors
A funeral director has called for a change in the law so that uncollected ashes of cremated people can be disposed of.
Lindsay Martin of Tayside firm Selwood's says that families often fail to realise that they have not given instructions as to what is to happen to the ashes after the ceremony, but as they are the family's property they cannot just be disposed of.
However it can cause upset to write to a family, perhaps years later, to ask for instructions – and some of the remains in the firm's possession date back almost 30 years.
Mr Martin would like a legal limit on the time firms like his are obliged to retain ashes.
