Tighter bail rules promised

18 January 2011

The rules for granting bail to offenders awaiting trial are to be tightened up, Justice Secretary Kenny MacAskill said yesterday.

Mr MacAskill was speaking after chairing an inaugural summit for victims of crime, held in Edinburgh and attended by justice organisations and victims' groups.

He said there was "room for improvement" in the present rules and that the summit had identified "a number of areas" for further work, such as enhanced national standards and better information on granting bail.

The subject was raised by Scottish Women's Aid, who argued that decision takers needed to have the right information to impose appropriate conditions to achieve safety.

"We as a Government have learned much from this inaugural summit and we will build on this by working closely with stakeholders to address the priorities that the summit highlighted", Mr MacAskill added.
